@TD Grad Issue – June 2025

In the Spring of 2014, on the drive back from a Big Picture Learning school in Providence, Rhode Island, Principal William Groot and teachers Kevin Godber and Joel Sjaarda wrote the overview and the application form for Internship Block:

“TDChristian High School is excited to offer a new four- period block for Semester One. It will consist of two in- school credits and two co-operative education credits. We believe that this block will engage students in learning as they relate what happens in their co-op workplace to their learning in school.”

Eighteen Grade 11 students signed up for that first year, and the program continues to go strong with the support of teachers Joel Sjaarda, John Terpstra, and Linda Kim. This semester, nine Grade 12 (some chose it for a second time) and 15 Grade 11 students are enrolled in the program, which includes working two days a week and going to school for three. Benefits include students working in their local communities and working for Christians from the greater TDChristian community.

In short, Internship Block allows students bound for the workplace, college, or university to pursue interests and passions while gaining valuable workplace knowledge and experience. At present, 13 Internship Block students have been hired for the summer, including four who will continue working full-time into the fall.

“I’ve truly learned what it takes to be a kindergarten teacher and embody Christ within this career. Being able to experience and take on the responsibilities of my placement has taught me how to apply my gifts, knowledge, and learning more than sitting in a classroom ever could.” Kendra Menken, Gr. 11

“I like that I am able to learn about all the different parts of construction.” Shayne Heming, Gr. 11

“I help seniors do activities. I like it because I get to learn about people and their personalities.” Markus Venne, Gr. 12

“This is a really great course that allowed me to meet amazing and helpful people who provided me with knowledge and skills that I wouldn’t have been able to get otherwise.” Mariah Tortolo, Gr. 12

“I have had two placements. At L.A. Music, I’ve been working with very high-end guitars, getting them prepared and shipped. I am learning to be a harder and smarter worker. At Main Street Music, I’ve learned everything about the recording industry, production networking, and just working with the band.” Rylan Jones, Gr. 12

“Internship block has been an invaluable experience for both of our girls. It provided real-world exposure that allowed them to try out a career before investing time and money in schooling. They forged industry connections and gained confidence and experience that will serve them well in the future. In our opinion, Internship should be mandatory for all students.” Carolyn and Darren White, parents
