Passage: Luke 24:13 to 35
“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” Luke 24:30,31
The account of the Road to Emmaus centres on Jesus noticing two of his disciples walking down a path and being invited into a conversation with them. The disciples don’t know that they are talking to Jesus until Jesus breaks bread with them and then disappears.
In this story, there are two things I noticed that I want to share.
Jesus does not force himself into our lives; he comes by invitation. When walking with the disciples, Jesus waits for them to invite him into the conversation. We might go through hardships in our lives and think that God isn’t with us because we feel alone or feel as if he doesn’t care for us. In reality, God is waiting for you to go to him. He is patient with us as Jesus was patient with the two disciples.
Jesus reveals himself when we are ready to accept him into our lives. In Luke 24:30,31, we read, “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” The disciples didn’t know they were talking to Jesus along the way.
There have been times in my life when I felt as if God didn’t care about me or didn’t love me as much as he loved others. However, I realized during the past few months that God has been with me the whole time through people and their words. God was patient with me so that when he opened my eyes, I was able to realize that he never left my side. He sent others to help me. Until my eyes were opened, his presence was disguised.
The story of the Road to Emmaus reminds me that I ooen doubt God’s presence in my life. Even though it might be hard for you, try to put your trust in God because he is always present – he wants us to invite him into our lives.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for blessing us with your love and patience. Help us to open our eyes to see more of you. Lord, make us aware of your presence whether that be through things we do daily or people we talk to.
Fill us with the knowledge of knowing that you are with us every step of the way and that you will never leave our side. May everyone reading or listening to these words take a step towards inviting you into their life without being afraid.
Thank you for all the wonderful things you have done for us in Jesus. Amen
