Devotion 4: Jesus before the Sanhedrin (Easter Devotions Project)

Grade 12 student

Passage: Matthew 26:57 to 68

“But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Jesus, who never broke a law or committed a single sin, is quite out of place when he is brought before a jury, the high priest, and the elders of Israel. We would expect Jesus to once again outwit the religious leaders with reasoning from the Scriptures and walk out a free man. But this time is different. Jesus is silent; he lets the insults of the Sanhedrin slap him right in the face.

Why does Jesus remain silent?

One reason Jesus chose to remain silent is because of submission. Many people are confused by what submission means. Biblical submission, simply put, is aligning your own desires, plans, and will to what God’s wants. Jesus pracMced submission in what he didn’t say, remaining silent and deciding not to deliver himself out of the Sanhedrin’s hands. In Ma6hew 26:64, Jesus proclaims the Father’s will by what he does, speaking to his divine nature, and then allowing the religious leaders to take Him capMve. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sijng at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

How can we, today, make our desires more like God’s, when it’s no longer our will that is acMve in our lives but God’s will being brought forth through us?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before you with our hopes, dreams, and desires and lay them at your feet. We thank you for all you have given us and for a desire to know you more. We pray that your will would flourish in our lives and take capMve the desires that are contrary to yours.

May we know when to be silent and turn the other cheek and to know when to speak boldly about our greatest treasure, you.

Thank you, Lord!
We pray this all in the Holy Name of Jesus Christ. Amen
